The Virginia 4-H Participants have a variety of reasons for wanting to participate this year.
Tells us that while he is in the Dominican Republic, the most important aspect he wants to experience is their culture, as he aims to become a more diverse and open-minded person regarding different ideas and ideologies. He also wants the Dominican children to understand that Americans are not as rude and "spoiled" as we appear on the news and television. For the most part, we want to help others.
Alex Blake (18) Fairfax Co.
Alex applied for this program because:
-she loves spending time in nature, and there is so much natural beauty to take in at Punta Cana!
-She is passionate about protecting the environment and hopes to learn more about how environmental issues are threatening Dominicans' livelihoods during the tour of the Grupo Puntacana Foundation's Center for Sustainability.
-As someone who plans to potentially study abroad in a Hispanic country, she wants to improve her Spanish skills. Since the best way to improve your foreign language fluency is by talking to native speakers, this seemed like a fantastic opportunity to become a more confident speaker.
-She loves learning and experiencing new things and she thinks that spending time with people my age from a different cultural background will be rewarding and fun.
-Since she's been involved in 4-H for a long time, she has volunteered with youth a lot in the past and really enjoys watching them make new friends and grow in unfamiliar environments. she believes that every kid should have the opportunity to thrive and she wants to help make that happen.
-She thinks service is really valuable, especially in underserved communities where it is needed most.

Stella-Claire Looney (16) Alleghany Co.
Ariana Blake (15) Fairfax Co.
Loves community service and 4-H Camp, so it combines two of her favorite things. It'll also be a great opportunity for her to practice her Spanish!
Her personal goals for this week in the Dominican Republic are to connect with the locals, hold a good week of camp, and make an impact on the community!
She had the opportunity to go on this trip last year and learned so much about others and about herself. She gained a new sense of understanding of other people and their experiences, and she looks forward to learning more about the Dominican Republic and its citizens!
Cash Chambers (17) Highland Co.

Charlee is interested in learning about the Dominican Republic culture and people and learning to communicate with the people because she is not fluent in Spanish. Her personal goal is to serve the people of the Dominican Republic in a respectful and memorable manner.
Shenandoah Co.
Carol enjoys traveling, working with teens and learning about cultures. She enjoys watching the 4-H teens have life changing experiences as they grow in their leadership and world citizenship skills and develop lifelong friendships. This Dominican Republic program, the 4-H teens and the Dominican people, hold a very special place in Carol's heart. Our 4-H group is welcomed back every year like family. This is such a unique and impactful way to experience a different culture and to make international friends.
